Media Skills Training
Joann Said:
Can a person with no formal educational training in media get a job in the field? We Answered:
You really want to get in? Start writing. A web site, a blog, a free paper, ANYTHING to build up your chops and improve as a writer is something you can add to a portfolio and resume. The single biggest reason journalism has slipped so far in quality is _because_ the so-called "reporters" have journalism degrees. Most are told how to present themselves on TV and edit to 300 words or 30 seconds, but few have the intelligence or education to know what they are talking about.
In the past, newspaper writers began as "cubs", young trainees who worked their way up from the bottom through the entire newspaper. Early in the 20th century, most were high school graduates or studied in fields unrelated to "journalism" (poly-sci, business, English, etc.). They were educated in the real world, not the fairy tale world of media.
If you want to be a journalist, start by getting an education in the real world: politics, law, business, science, education, ANY field except "journalism". You can learn how to look good in front of a camera, but not how to interpret a government document.
The most respected journalists of the past never studied journalism:
- Andy Rooney
- Walter Cronkite
- Edward R. Murrow
- Walter Winchell (a vaudeville performer and high school graduate)
- Bob Woodward (law student, and college dropout)
- David Brinkley (started while in high school, continued in college)
She's not a "great" journalist, but Catherine Crier of CNN is a lawyer and used to be a trial judge. And Peter Jennings was hardly respectable, but he was a high school dropout.

Any school employees want to describe their career to me (I'm considering a new career)? We Answered:
I have known my friend, Christy for two years now and she works at a school. She is both a social worker and a guidance counsellor at the school. When children are causing chaos in the classroom, she works things out with them pretty much the same way a social worker would do so. She is also a guidance counsellor and helps out students with emotional problems and stuff like that. Basically, she takes care of the students who need help with their emotional being. We talk a lot about her job at this school (a regular public school). She says that they're pros and cons to the jobs, but you really benefit from this. Some of the positives is that you get to meet lots of kids and you'll be surprised by some of them. Another positive is that there is not a little bit of money that you are getting, but just enough but not a whole lot. Some negatives is that by the end of the day, you'll be scared by some of the problems you hear these kids talk about.
This job is sort of like being a school psychologist, but, it's with less stress.

please help me with training a dog to do...?We Answered:
To train your dog it is easier to take a class from someone in your area. There are also several good books and DVD's that go through the steps too. You can also join 4H if you are young enough (under 18) to learn those skills too.Sorry, I don't do the ASPCA, HSUS, PeTA or any of those animal rightist groups. I work with my local shelters because they need the money more. The national organizations do nothing to help local shelters.

Training for Olympics?We Answered:
It's going to take more than 3-4 times a week. Also it's going to take more than just swimming to train. You will have to run and spend time in the weight room. It's VERY difficult to pursue a dream like you wish to achieve. You will also have to give up a social life and train non-stop. 2012 Olympics I don't think you'd make, but possibly the 2016 games. There is a lot more that goes into it than most people realize. You also have to compete in National events and World events before you could even qualify for the Olympics. You also have to get on a special diet and calorie intake. It's a lot of work, but if you are 200% dedicated try it. You are going to have to work 8-10 hours a day everyday of the year. Good Luck...Go USA!David Said:
