Independent Schools Teaching Job

Oscar Said:

What should I do if I'm teaching in the UK and made redundant but on a work permit? ?

We Answered:

You have no choice but to gain QTS status, if you have not already done so. As an unqualified teacher your chances of finding a job will be very poor.

And yes, it may well be very challenging..although this will depend where you live.

Some subjects still have shortages, but many are over-subscribed. Humanities, I am afraid, is one of the latter.

However, if there are only two of you in the department your fears about redundancy may be unfounded. Your subject may not be thought of as important, but it is still a legal requirement in the NC. Best to talk with your Head as soon as you can, to clear things up if at all possible.

You should also be in a union (if not, join one pretty sharpish...anyone who teaches without being in a union is a fool, imo.......their legal advice and support is invaluable). They will be able to guide you and advise you about both work permit and redundancy, if it comes to that.

Is there a Times Educational Supplement equivalent for finding teaching jobs in New Zealand and Australia?

We Answered:

For New Zealand you are best to refer to the Education Gazette. The online page is linked below.

How do I get a teaching assistant job with Houston independent school district?

We Answered:

The best way to get a job at HISD is to hand-deliver your resume to their Human Resources department. When you get there, ask them who you can call to follow up. Get a name. Then call in about a week and ask for that specific person.

Bob Said:

Teaching job advertised now (Feb) -- starting immediately? or next fall?

We Answered:

. Definitely give them a call NOW. It shouldn't take but a few minutes to ask HR about the starting date. Do NOT get into details about guiting your other job.
IF they ask, sure, tell them you want immediate employment. Inquire about other positions.

Dolores Said:

If a teaching job is being advertised in February, is it for starting right now or next year?

We Answered:

I wouldn't make any assumptions. Most likely it will start next academic year but they may have lost someone and need an immediate replacement. Since you want the job either way I would recommend waiting until the interview. When you o in for the interview they should tell you the time frame if not ask when the starting date would be. Calling ahead may make you look "high maintenance". Be sure to be ready to discuss the reasons for leaving your last position in the middle of the school year. If the position does start July 1st look for a job to get you by until then. Maybe long term substitute or a tutoring center like Sylvan. Good luck.

Stacy Said:

Im applying for a Teaching job and i need a good answer to this question... not to short please?

We Answered:

Seriously, if you can't answer the question yourself, you shouldn't be applying for the position. It wants to know YOUR reasons, not someone else's.

Discuss It!
