Jimmie Said:

I am looking for four year colleges that have great musical theater programs.?

We Answered:

Check out Carnegie Mellon. They have theater and opera as major programs, not sure about musical theater.

Vernon Said:

If i wanted to apply for the UCLA graduate program for acting, should i be holding a degree in Theater?

We Answered:

You don't necessarily need a BA or BFA in theater in order to be accepted to an MFA acting program. It depends on the program. If you need the BFA, the program will tell you so on its web page.

My friend studied for his MFA in acting from a top acting school, after getting his BA in history. At many MFA programs, it's not about what you studied as an undergraduate: it's about your audition.

Tamara Said:

What schools have the best theatre graduate programs? (excluding ivy leagues)?

We Answered:

NYU probably has the most graduates who go on to become major actors of the screen or stage. A lot of my friend's parents are actors or are in the industry, and many of them are NYU grads.

Yale (which of course is an Ivy) is known for having the most stellar theater program.

Right now I'm focusing on undergrad, so I can't say for certain that these schools have top-notch grad programs, but I'll give you my list anyway. : )

Northwestern
Boston University
UCLA
USC
Emerson
Carnegie Mellon
University of Texas at Austin
GW
Florida State University

Good luck!

Mike Said:

Graduate admissions for theater?

We Answered:

I did not, but several of my friends did. The average age for admitted students was late 20's, early 30s, but there were students older than that, and students younger. One man, in my friend's MFA program at Columbia, was in his mid 40's. He'd been a priest, and decided to make a career change. A *big* career change, obviously.

I think that, beyond talent and etc., if you have a real reason for being there, and can communicate that to them, your age won't hinder you. But you can't go in there saying you want to study to allow you to become the ingenue (OMG I can't figure out how to spell that in English, sorry) on As the World Turns, because that isn't realistic. But if you wanted to get your MFA to improve your craft, or to allow you to teach, or... something real, something true - then I don't see why they wouldn't admit you.

Your age is going to be an issue as a female actor (I'm sure you know this), but not necessarily in terms of grad school admissions. Not if you have a real reason for being there. Not if you can communicate that reason.

It's certainly worth trying for. You lose nothing (beyond time, effort and application fees) by trying.
