Online Community College

Jamie Said:

Does the army accept 15 online college credits from a accredited community college?

We Answered:

As long as they're 100 level we will accept online classes. For the Army, the difference between online classes and physical classes is the fact that you can enlist while currently enrolled in a physical college (assuming your ship date is after your final class and you don't fail a class) but you have to wait until you are already finished with 15 semester hours before you can enlist with online classes.

ADDED: We were given authorization through a USAREC message (which aren't released directly to civilians or even other Soldiers who aren't working in Accessions Command) to accept online classes for enlistment purposes late last year. The message said as long as they're accredited, 100 level courses we can accept them. If someone told you we don't accept them their information is outdated because our battalion education specialist verified we can accept them.

Online school or community college online classes?

We Answered:

If you have the option, I would certainly go with the local community college.

Firstly, it is almost certainly going to be cheaper. Community colleges receive funding from the government (city, county, state, and/or federal depending on the school) and don't have to charge as much for tuition typically. They also exist for the public good, not so that the school's owner/owners/stockholders can make money. It means, among other things, that they aren't going to find every way to get every penny they possible can from you.

Second, community colleges are real and accredited colleges. The schools like University of Phoenix claim that they are accredited, but generally they are not accredited by one of the six regional boards. This means that your credits likely will not transfer. If you decide you want to get a bachelor's degree or a higher degree you can't go to a local college or university without redoing all of your previous work. Instead, you have to get your degree through the online school, which will likely be more expensive. Many employers will not accept degrees from online schools, unless they are through a real, regionally accredited college or university (ie., University of Maryland, Tennessee Board of Regents, etc.).

The last thing you want to do is spend thousands of dollars and years of your life in school only to find that you can't get a job.
