Excelsior College Online

Edwin Said:

Anyone ever got an online degree from Excelsior college?

We Answered:

I haven't got that degree, but I've taught online pretty extensively and I'm in touch with a lot of what goes on.

So let me advise you in general so that you can assess the school from your own self-knowledge and needs.

First, is it fully accredited by one of the major boards? If so, then the quality will be roughly equivalent to any other online school.

Second, what field are you studying for? If it's a technological field, especially one that has to do with computers, then an online degree is fine; if it's a management or other 'people skills' field, research has shown that employers will downgrade their rating of you as an applicant if they think your degree was earned entirely or mostly online.

Third, the private colleges that specialize in online degrees are EXpensive!!! There are probably public universities and colleges in the state where you live that also offer online degree programs, and they're just expensive without the capital letters :-) The other advantage of the state schools is that their diploma and transcript might not say "online degree" quite so obviously--and if the employer doesn't ask, they might not downgrade you as an applicant.

What do you think of Excelsior College's online nursing program?

We Answered:

i know someone who is enrolled in it. they received their RN in like 6 months, and now has a great job. this type of program is far better than an on site campus just for the fact that if you have a life, or family it is flexible to your needs not just the needs of the school. plus they do have an excellent customer service system, they dont hassle you when you call, they make every attempt to solve your problem that you may be having and they are very informative. again if you have a life, or kids especially go for it. the only downfall is the price. but when you look at it you will pay about the same amount in the end.

just sign up for the online degree program, they have quite a few selections, the nursing field is defiantely one to get into. a lot of hospitals now a days give excellent sign on bonuses for RN's in my area, depending on the hospital, you can get anywhere from a 5,000-15,000 sign on bonus along with the fact that many hospitals also are very willing to pay up to 80% of tuition. the only downfall is online scholorships and grants are a bit harder to get. but very worth it.

The following was written by "PhD Seeking" (not me)

As someone who's responsible for hiring people at my fortune 100 company, I can honestly say that any resume sporting an on-line degree goes into the "circular file", regardless of their other qualifications.

I have my MBA from a traditional school, and shortly after I graduated and continually until this day, I have been solicited by the UoP to teach on-line business courses for them. While I have several years of work experience (which they didn't know), I was apparently qualified simply because they purchased a mailing list of graduates from my school and saw I had a degree. Not that PhD professors are better teachers, because some of mine really sucked as communicators, but asking people with limited work and educational experience to teach students shows a lack of concern about educational quality, and more about getting an instructor at a cheap price. If you don't believe me, check out the career section on the UoP site or other job boards and you'll see the low standards they set for educators. (see the ad below)

Getting a real degree tells me the applicant can make a long term commitment that requires sacrifice. On-line classes are the ultimate sign of laziness. With all real colleges offering part-time or evening classes, going the on-line route suggests you're looking for the easy way out. Most employers within reputable companies, including myself, won't take a chance.

Lastly, be prepared for the teasing, either publically, or more probably, behind your back, by your co-workers with real degrees

Excelsior college?

We Answered:

I'm just finishing a BS with Excelsior. The only downside is the cost; they are a bit more expensive than most state-run colleges. There are a lot of advantages though. You can transfer credit from any accredited institution, and they do not have a minimum number of credits you have to take from them. Most colleges require a minimum of 30 credits be taken through them before they allow you to graduate. Also, if you are still enlisted they affer discounted tuition. And, if the nursing program offers any credit by examination (I assume they offer some), those tests are free to active duty military personnel.
Oh yeah, they will also apply the medical training you have already completed through Uncle Sam towards credits that are required.

Anyone know if Kaiser accepts RN grads from excelsior college (online) ?

We Answered:

That should be irrelevant because as long as you have your RN license, you are an RN.

Discuss It!

Be sure to check with the Board of Nursing in each state because some states have additional requirements for this program because they do not have clinical experiences.
