The University of Phoenix is a legal university in that it is regionally accredited. As for its reputation, well there is a lot of negative information about UoP mainly because of its heavy handed sales tactics. Furthermore, it is a very expensive option. There are far lower cost alternatives with better reputations.

My personal experience with Excelsior (BS '08 graduate) is that they permit you to accumulate credits from any other regionally accredited university which means that you can choose from online courses delivered by just about any other university and design your degree to suit your particular interests ( taking into consideration that you are aiming for a major in accounting). Excelsior offers you the greatest flexibility in this regard and therefore would enable you to complete your degree much faster ( and often more cheaply) than would normally be the case.

There are no GOOD distance learning programs.

Most online "universities" are actually For Profit corporations. Many employers will refuse to take an online degree seriously.

Many of these schools are dishonest. University of Phoenix was recently fined a record $9.8MM for sleazy recruiting practices and is currently under investigation for padding their placement numbers.
