Business Finance Career

Calvin Said:

A Finance/Business Career?

We Answered:

Yes, it sounds like you are on the right track. The best thing you could do for your career would be to line up some internships. There are plenty of MBA's with nice GPAs graduating every year, but so few of them can provide a work reference. You'll have a definite advantage over fellow students if you put an emphasis on the on-the-job experience while in school.

Juan Said:

Business vs finance career?

We Answered:

Hmmm. I would lean toward investment banking/finance track over consulting.

I had friends from my MBA class who went the consulting route and have enjoyed it, but personally, I think the investment banking life-style is a bit better and certainly pays more.

For example, when I was in I-banking, I may have been working until 9 or 10 (or much later) at night, but most nights, I would come home to my own bed and see my family. Consultants may not work the long hours, but they're on the road all the time and are away from their families much more. It's almost like working 24/7 from that perspective.

Ultimately, you have to choose which lifestyle fits you better.

It's also important to remember that you can do business administration or finance and still wind up in either industry. And in both industries you can pretty easily move into a corporate job or switch from i-banking to consulting or vice versa. You're certainly not locking yourself into a set career path either way.

Both areas are great ways to really launch your career and get way ahead. I think investment banking will get you there a bit more quickly than consulting, but it's not for everyone.

Good luck!

Irene Said:

Which degree is better for me to land a 6/5 figure career finance degree or business management?

We Answered:

You could have the greatest degree and the best results and be unemployed. Basically, you need more than just a qualification to earn the big money, you need to learn about working in that sector, make yourself known and useful to future employers. Maybe you should consider doing unpaid work experience for companies you would ultimately like to work for (whichever degree you choose) and that way you'll have insider information on how to get the top jobs, what qualifications the high earners have and you'll already know and hopefully have impressed your future boss.

Kristen Said:

I'm 28 and need a career. What business or finance role is open to me with a 2.2 arts degree?

We Answered:

Normally to break into financial sector you would need a numerical background. it is definitely going to be very hard for you. However saying that LSE (London School of Economics) has a summer school where you could do a finance or accounting course. The courses are very intense and normally for about 2 weeks a session. There are 2 sessions depending on the units you want to take. And also they are so in demand places run out really quickly. Worth giving them a call.
Good luck
