Is Accounting career path non-traditional for men?

We Answered:

I currently work in an accounting department at a government agency and we're all women. There have been men working there in the past and most have gone on to bigger & better things (more money).
I've also worked in an accounting department at a hospital and it was a mix but the women still outnumbered the men.
If you're good with numbers & analysis go for it.

Changing career Path? Accounting to Optometrist?

We Answered:

Make sure you are knowledgeable about the profession. Be specific as to why you want a career change in your essays. Study for the OAT. Shadow some optometrist in their offices. You should take your pre-req's at an accredited 4-year college. Any one should be fine. Many people change their professions to become optometrists, so don't worry too much about your backgorund.

is accounting a good career path to get into right now?

We Answered:

If you really like accounting and enjoy it, and see yourself getting into that type of work, then I would say go for it. You should choose your career based on your interests. That way you will be successful in the long run. During your senior year try to learn more about the CPA exam and start working on it.

Rhonda Said:

Need advice on an Accounting/Finance career path... Is it a good one?

We Answered:

Congrats on finishing school. As a former accounting student and the son and brother of CPA's I can only say this. While accounting and finance careers offer great opportunities for solid financial rewards, understand that success at any profession requires long hours (especially at tax time), diligence, and plenty of continuing education. Remember also that when you are just starting out you will probably be doing just one thing (financial statements, credit reviews, or some similarly dull function) for a while until you gain experience. The bottom line is, consider what you would really like to do instead of what you can make the most money at. If you do something you love you will be much more successful.

Steve Said:

is accounting a good career path to get into with the economy the way it is?

We Answered:

The current state of the economy makes it the perfect time to get into accounting. Due to recent changes in the laws, there is more and more bodies needed to perform accounting work. Accounting is pretty much a recession-proof industry. Even in 2001 when the Enron thing happened, all the accountants that worked for Arthur Anderson were able to get other jobs.

Of course, no one can "guarantee" that you will always have a job, but pretty much, if you work hard, you can earn a decent living as an accountant. Partners at large accounting firms make 6 digits.
